HAROLD S. PITTMAN
Harold Sherrod Pittman, retired Ventura County Treasurer-Tax Collector, passed away early on Thursday, November 12, 2015 after a long illness. He was born on February 19, 1939 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He was the fifth of six children born to May Violet Jenkins Pittman and John Olen Pittman. He was a graduate of Ardmore High School Class of 1957 and also was graduated from Oklahoma State University with a B.S. degree in Accounting.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1962 and enjoyed a wide variety of progressively more responsible jobs as his Navy career advanced. His tours of duty took him to many parts of the United States and the Far East, including Vietnam and the Philippines. He participated in the Naval Postgraduate Financial Management Program, which earned him an MBA degree from George Washington University in 1972.

He was transferred to the Ventura, California area in 1979 as Auditor Comptroller/Budget Officer of the Naval Ship Weapons Systems Engineering Station (NSWSES) at Port Hueneme, California. Subsequently, at the same military command, he was the Director of Logistics and responsible for civilian and military personnel, providing varied technical support. On June 1, 1982, he retired from the U.S. Navy with twenty years of service and the rank of Commander, Supply Corps, United States Navy.

In August 1982, he began his career with the County of Ventura, California. He began working with Norm Hawkes, County Auditor-Comptroller, as a Supervising Auditor. He was subsequently promoted to Chief Deputy Auditor, in charge of the Accounting Division of the Auditor-Comptroller’s office. He moved to the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office in 1986 to work for Catherine Johnston and the Board of Retirement as the Retirement Manager and Executive Officer of the Board, with responsibilities involving the management of the Ventura County Employees’ Retirement Association. He moved within the office to become the Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector. After Katie Johnston’s unexpected retirement, he was appointed Acting Treasurer-Tax Collector-Public Administrator, effective April 1, 1988. He was appointed Treasurer-Tax Collector-Public Administrator on May 10, 1988 to fill the unexpired term of Catherine Johnston and on June 5, 1990, was elected to a four-year term. Hal ran unopposed during subsequent elections. He retired in 2002, due to illness.

Hal is married to the former Roberta (Bobbie) Carhart Bliss. They live in Camarillo and celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary this past June. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Montrue Pittman Krasman, and his brother, Olen Lemuel Pittman. He is survived by his siblings, Nila Pittman Alberts, Sami Pittman Sutherland, John Deryl Pittman and seven nephews and five nieces.
There will be a memorial service at 3 P.M. on Saturday, January 9th, at the Conejo Valley Community Church, 650 Erbes Road in Thousand Oaks
